Grabbing the Screen
There are several ways to make screen grabs with
ClipMate:
- Capturing the Desktop
- Just press the PrintScreen (Prt Scr) key (a button on your
keyboard, often next to the F12 key). This makes a Bitmap
image of the whole desktop, and sends it to ClipMate.
- Capturing a Window
- Press Alt+PrintScr (at the same time), and the current window
will be sent to ClipMate as a bitmap.
- Capturing an Area-
This gives you a "rubberband" mouse selection, so you can specify
an area of the screen to grab. From ClipMate's main menu,
select Edit | "Screen Capture - Area" (or use Ctrl+Alt+F12), and
your mouse pointer will turn into a crosshair. Click 'n' drag
(left button) to mark your selection. Release the mouse button,
and a bitmap is captured by ClipMate.
- Capturing an "object"
- Similar to the rectangular selection, use Edit | "Screen Capture
- Object". This is useful for capturing certain objects,
such as the contents of the browser window without the surrounding
frame, toolbar, etc..
- More information on capturing is
here.
Storage
ClipMate will store the screen captures as JPEG,
in the ClipMate database. That way, they'll take up very little
space. ClipMate can accumulate hundreds - even thousands of
images. They'll all arrive with a title of "Graphic:xxx"
where xxx is the date/time of the capture. But you can rename them,
to make important grabs easier to find later.
Exporting
You can export screen grab images to .BMP (bitmap)
or .JPG (Compressed JPEG) files. Just select the clip(s) and
use File | Export to send them to any directory. You'll be
presented with a dialog where you can specify the JPEG option,
compression level, and file naming options. This is
particularly useful for inclusion on web pages or sending via
e-mail.
| Printing ClipMate makes it easy to print screen grabs. If you've been
using computers since the old DOS days, you may long for the
simplicity of pressing the PrintScreen key, and having the
screen actually print! Happy times are back. Just
press the "print" button on ClipMate's toolbar, and the image
will print, along with the date/time of capture, title, etc..
You can also obtain "printscreen nirvana" by setting the
"Automatically print screen shots" and "quickprint" options in
the PRINTING section of the
User Preferences dialog. |

E-Mail
Most e-mail programs cannot paste images.
But they can send images as attachments. With ClipMate, it's
easy to do. Here's an
article on how to do that.
Sharing
Sometimes you need to share screen captures with
other workstations. With ClipMate's shared, multi-user database
capability, you can move your new screen capture into a collection
on a
shared database, and make it available immediately to other
users and workstations.
More!
Along with this, you get the rest of
ClipMate's
functionality, including the ability to hold hundreds or thousands
of previous clipboard items, edit, combine, spellcheck, encrypt,
share, and reformat data. Read about the full set of features
here.
Limitations
ClipMate's screen capture capability is limited to
what is visible on the screen. If you can't see it, ClipMate
can't grab it. Also, certain applications that
use DirectX (some games, TV Tuners, DVD Players) are writing
directly to the screen, and bypass the regular graphics drivers.
ClipMate cannot capture the DirectX images.
